Great Support for the Food Rescue Program
Thank You to Albertsons, Walmart, Target, Costco and now Sam’s Club for the great abundance of food provided in the Food Rescue Program. This endeavor redirects grocery items towards families in need; otherwise it all would have been just thrown away. In 2009, 1 in 5 families nationwide had experienced hunger at least one day in the year. And for some it is a recurring dilemma. So we thank these stores and all our supporters for their generosity to the less fortunate.
Open Through the Noon Hour to Meet Increasing Demand
Up until now, we had closed our services on the noon hour so staff could have a break and lunch. As a walk-in facility, we faced long lines of people in need early in the morning and again first thing in the afternoon. And weather didn’t matter as they were exposed outside the front door. This problem was further exasperated when we had to turn some away because there just wasn’t enough time to see them all. Something had to be done. This February we started keeping the doors open through noon, alternating lunchtimes so some staff are always ready to serve. The results are readily apparent. We are meeting the increased demand with no more long lines and no turning anyone away, with the added bonus of considerably less waiting for services and less stress for everyone involved. It is an easy change with a significant outcome.
Dining Out for Life
